In response to the ongoing hunger crisis in the country, Jumia Group joins forces with The United States International University – Africa in a highly impacting three-week campaign dubbed “Rise up and tackle the hunger crisis”
Speaking during the handover event, acting Managing Director for Jumia Travel, Stanislas Dedinechin stressed on the company’s culture as being founded on impacting lives, “Easter is traditionally known as a time to share. Partnering with USIU gives us the opportunity to share our resources with the people who need it most. We are humbled to be part of this humane initiative, and call on others to join in and support Red cross in alleviating and containing this crisis.”
Other corporate partners included the SKF Kenya Group, represented by Regional Customer Service Manager, Ms. Esther Odongo. Ms.Odongo emphasized on the vital role of corporate social responsibility and called on corporates to support the nationwide cause.
The donation, consisting of both in-kind and in-cash contribution worth Ksh. 1.5 Million was received by the acting secretary general – Red Cross Mr. Ayaz Manji present at the event.
According to the global humanitarian organization, more than 2.7 Kenyans in 23 counties are food insecure, with extreme cases of mortality, as well as death of both wildlife and livestock reported across the country. This prompted the government to declare the hunger a national disaster in February.
Ambassador Ruthie Rono, the Deputy Vice Chancellor -USIU, termed the campaign as a “show of commitment to touching lives beyond education” and expressed optimism in the quick mitigation of the calamity.
While donated foodstuff will be distributed to worst hit families in respective regions, cash donation will be allocated through Cash Transfer Program (CTP). This as explained by Manji is to empower the affected communities by supporting the local economy, as well as to safeguard human dignity during the distribution process.
