Unfortunately the Marsabit – Lake Turkana Cultural Festival has been postponed to a later date this December, 2019.
The 11th edition of Lake Turkana Cultural Festival was previously scheduled to take place on the 13th – 16th of June 2019 in Loiyangalani.
Marsabit County CEC for Tourism through a facebook post attributed the postponement to the prevailing drought conditions. This is the second time the festival has been rescheduled after initially being moved from dates in May.
The international festival has always held a very important position on Kenya Tourism Board and World Tourism calendar. The postponement has affected many tourists who had booked international flights to attend during the previously announced dates.
Loiyangalani means “a place of many trees” in the native Samburu tongue and is home to the El Molo, an almost extinct community. The festival is annually organized by the County Government of Marsabit, Local Community Festival Committee, Kenya Tourism Board, National Museums of Kenya and Kenya Wildlife Service. This is one of the most memorable events in Kenya’s tourist calendar.
Lake Turkana, also known as Jade sea because of its blue-green color, and regarded as world’s biggest desert lake, it lies up in the Northern Kenya region, an area considered by anthropologists as the cradle of mankind. Most of the areas in this region are virgin and scenic, perfect for adventurers and those thrilled by world’s interesting cultures.
Besides celebrating and helping preserve the cultures of the El Molo, Samburu, Gabbra, Rendile, Watta, Dasannach, Pokot and the Turkana, the festival also focuses on the economic development of the region and participating communities. Amazing display and presentation of cultural dances and traditions are just but a few awesome experiences-cum-reasons you shouldn’t miss this year’s edition.
For tourists in search of luxury, flying there would be a few minutes noble alternative, but for adventurers, a trip by road from Nairobi via Nyahururu’s Thompson falls and across the Samburu plains would be the noblest idea offering you a taste of serene Kenyan countryside. It actually should just be your perfect Weekend Getaway. Mark the dates #TembeaKenya. For more information about the festival, consult your preferred tour operator.
