The Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration is definitely one of the most unforgettable and remarkable natural activities that make Kenya world’s number one safari destination. Come July, August through to October, tourists flock the Maasai Mara, the most popular wildlife spot in Kenya, to catch a glimpse of this spectacular event. This natural occurrence has a lot to offer. The deep, primal rumbling sound of thundering hooves as well as low grunts is something that raises nerves.

The sight of the wildebeest migration is amazing, with an unbroken energetic mass that widens from one perspective to the other,..and the fact that they are joined by stripped black and white zebras, gives the sight an outstanding feature. There is no other place in the world with a movement of over a million-number of animals from one place to another apart from the Maasai Mara.

The migration takes place from the month of July all through to October. Wildebeests cross the Mara River from Serengeti plains into the Maasai Mara National Reserve in search of pasture. The crossing is such a spectacular event that stuns and one that you should at least plan to experience once in your lifetime.

The Drill

The wildebeests have to overcome the wrath of hungry crocodiles that are always the ‘main beneficiaries’ of this natural spectacle. Determined wildebeests wrestle with crocodiles for survival as they struggle to swim across Mara river. That is usually the highlight of the event!..but not all make it, as most succumb to this battle. The battle extends beyond the river where the rule of the jungle is the law and order of the day. As you are aware, these wildebeests do not hold much stake on the food chain. They end up being hunted by larger carnivores, who are always in the vicinity ‘monitoring’ their movements. That’s nature!

The wildebeest migration can be captured on a game drive in a customized vehicle, on a walking safari guided by a Maasai warrior, on a horseback safari in areas surrounding the park as well as from a hot air balloon over the plains of the Mara. This definitely is one of those African safari experiences that you should not miss in your 2019 shopping cart. Do not forget to carry your camera alongside some crazy energy to experience this 8th Wonder of the World.
